Westwood/Century City

Most famed for being the home of UCLA, Westwood has all the appeal of a college town but done on a larger level. Westwood is a magnet for academics and professionals and offers a wide variety of academic and cultural opportunities. Century City was developed on property used by 20th Century Fox for making motion pictures and has been transformed into a neighborhood known for its dramatic towers and bustling shopping mall.

Real Estate:  This area has plenty of single-family homes for sale in the neighborhoods surrounding UCLA as well as high-rise condo towers flanking Wilshire Boulevard. UCLA was founded in 1926 and many of the homes in the area surrounding the campus are rich in historic charm.

Community Life:  Westwood Village attracts both college students and local residents with a bustling central area. As befits a college town the food options are plentiful and range from inexpensive options to some of the best restaurants in town. The Westwood Village Farmers’ Market is held on Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Education: Westwood is served by the Los Angeles Unified School District. Local schools include Fairburn Avenue Elementary School and Warner Avenue Elementary School as well as the Ralph Waldo Emerson Middle School. Private schools include Sinai Akiba and Saint Paul the Apostle. The UCLA Lab School is both a school for children and a laboratory for both teachers and researchers in childhood education.

Transportation:  Westwood is accessed by the 405 Freeway and State Route 2.  There are ample bike lanes throughout the Westwood Village area. The area is served by several bus lines including Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus and a Commuter Express Line. Metro’s Valley-Westside Express operates during commuting hours on weekdays.

Local Attractions: Regency’s Village Theatre, formerly known as the Fox Theater, is an attention-getting landmark with its 170-foot tower and Art Deco Fox sign. It is across the street from the Bruin Theatre which was opened in 1936. Westwood Village Memorial Park is the final resting place for many celebrities including Marilyn Monroe, Truman Capote, and Farrah Fawcett. The Hammer Museum attracts top-level exhibits and special programs and is free on Thursdays. The Los Angeles California Temple is the second largest temple operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and includes a visitors’ center and family history center. The Geffen Theater has two separate venues, the Gil Cates Theater, which is housed in the site of the former Masonic Affiliates Club, and the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theatre.
