The Story of an Inspired Craft : Meet Celebrity Hatmaker and Partners Trust Client Nick Fouquet

When thinking of revolutionizing a business, most people gravitate toward invention rather than revisitation; creating from nothing rather than creating from something. However, for some, the past provides the greatest inspiration of all. Meet Nick Fouquet, client of Partners Trust Associate Stefanie Becker, a fresh creative whose art is derived from the past, yet revised and reinstated in the present.

His designs are soulful, personal, uniquely inspired and devised. Channeling his artistry into 100% Beaver fur felt, Fouquet is, indeed, a hatter. No, not quite mad a hatter, but rather a visionary and prolific hatmaker who outfits some of the most fashionable celebrities in Hollywood. Pharrell’s memorable hat at the 2014 Grammy’s was, in fact, a distinct Fouquet creation.

Having lived in France, Florida, Patagonia, Australia, New York, Colorado, and now LA, Fouquet’s hats are exclusive reflections of his travels. In a coveted interview with Partners Trust, Nick shared that his experiences abroad lend to his personal aesthetic: to explore is to be reinspired. The young hatmaker was just recently inducted into the CFDA, bringing him into an exclusive category of the best designers in America. Only artists of the uppermost caliber receive this designation.

PT: Who would you invite to your fantasy dinner party, living or deceased and why?

NF: Bob Marley, the Dalai Lama, Pope Francis, and my Mom…. because we would have a killer dance party.

What separates Nick Fouquet from other designers, and not just those in hatmaking, is his dedication to sustainability. Nick sources the best quality materials so as nothing goes to waste, “utilizing the needs of the present without compromising the resources of the future,” as he explained. Apart from his travels, Nick is particularly inspired by nature, which has a prominent influence on his work. It’s quite possible you may find Nick at Third Point Beach in Malibu immersing himself in the grandeur of the sea and conjuring up his next designs.

PT: If you were traveling to a remote space and could only bring three things with you, what would they be?

NF: A surfboard, music, and cookies.

For Nick Fouquet, hatmaking is a form of meditation; an art form to disconnect from the world and submerse in a creative realm that is uniquely his. He hopes that his legacy as a designer tells a story of mystery and mysticism. Fouquet’s main objective, at the end of the day, is to give his customers confidence; that is, truly, his greatest reward.
