Annually celebrated on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday encourages shoppers to tackle their holiday gift lists by visiting local, independently-owned stores as opposed to big-box retailers. The campaign, first conceived of by American Express in 2010 to help small companies still mired in the recession, has proved to be highly effective as more and more merchants rally behind one another in solidarity.
Last year alone, 112 million shoppers showed their love for their favorite spots, and spent a reported $15.3 billion at small businesses. Media outlets, such as the Los Angeles Times, have churned out their own lists of where to #shopsmall come Saturday, November 25.
The nationwide shopping day has even snowballed into a Shop Small movement featuring craft markets and pop-up shops throughout the year, yet none of these events is more special nor highly-anticipated than the ones that occur during the holiday season. For your shopping pleasure, we’ve rounded up the top five markets hitting the streets of Los Angeles this December so that you can continue to show your support and positively impact your local community. From handmade edibles to lifestyle goods and must-haves for the home, these marketplaces offer gifts that come with a story, and are a great way to usher in the holidays.
